The most important conclusions from the literature on this subject are presented. The impact of democracy on economic growth is empirically tested using data for transition countries. There is a consensus that the state institutions like rule of law, property rights and governance are very important for long-term economic growth. However, the impact of democracy is not so unequivocal. Democracy is not precondition for economic growth nor an obstacle. The undertaken analysis shows that democracy and wealth go hand in hand in transition countries. Moreover, more democratic countries also enjoy a high rate of economic growth. Therefore, we can conclude that the experience of transition countries shows that democracy and economic growth do not have to be competitive goals.
